The answer to this question is hard to fit into a salary bracket. An artist without a degree, starting out, will be making his or her base salary on some other form of income as it is not reasonable in today's world to make a living on ones paintings (at an early age) unless that one artist is a GENIUS and VERY LUCKY. An artist can put work into local galleries and garner small sales there, anywhere from $50 - 300+ dollars (dependent on the market and how the artist prices his or her work.) Painters may be able to find industrial employment for contractors, painting walls. It's not the home goal, but it's a start.
An artist with a B.F.A, however, is hardly better off. Four percent of art graduates WORK in the Arts. This should not be surprising. The BFA can find the artist a better paying job in any field, really, which will help the artist have the income to produce their work. Or, the artist can take on a residency program or go for their MFA. Residency programs are sort of like art camps that last for a year; a craft school takes the artist on and pays for housing and food, while the artist is committed to making work for one year straight. It is an excellent source on a resume and will give the artist a boost for the future.
An artist with an M.F.A will have the option of teaching opened up to them, which will bring secure salaried job with great benefits, as well as a work place encouraging the artist to create and research as much as possible.
The true answer to this question is that the artist salary, despite medium, is dependent upon contacts (it's often WHO you know, at times,) galleries, educational experience, and drive.
