The "fattest" or heaviest person I can find is Jon Broward Minnoch, of Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA. Though he was not scaled at his peak weight, a "close approximation" put him at roughly 1,400 lbs. When he was hospitalized in 1978 due to cardiac and respiratory failure, he was diagnosed with generalized edema, which caused his body to retain extracellular fluids. His doctor estimated that at least 900 lbs. of his weight was basically water.

Later that year, Minnock married Jeanette, a slip of a gal at 110 lbs., and thereafter managed somehow to father two children with her. During his stay at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, he had to be moved on two rolling beds used side by side, and it took 13 people to roll him over to allow his bedding to be changed.

After 16 months of hospital care, Minnoch was released in 1980, weighing 476 lbs. His weight loss during that period (est. 924 lbs.) is still a world record. But only a year later, Minnoch was readmitted and weighed at 952 lbs. His condition was deemed to be untreatable. Nearly two years later, on September 10, 1983, Jon Minnoch died at age 42. At the time of his death, he weighed 798 lbs. and had a body mass index of 105.3. (Normal BMI is low 20s; obesity begins at BMI=30.)
