First I recommend getting enough to spell "chemist." That is always a good start.

Then it depends on what you want to do with your chemistry training. To be a professor at a university, you must have a PhD. This also true of many companies who employ chemists to research how to improve and create new products. However, there are a number of jobs available to trained chemists with a Master's degree or just a college degree. These will be paid less than with a PhD, but may be just a interesting! For instance high school teachers, lab technicians and others do not need PhD to be considered a "chemist."
