price is based on model, condition and date of mfg. if your colt is an early single action revolver then it would have been made about 1880. good single actions command a high price. but you will not command a high price without full details as to markings and overall condition as well as pictures.................if it is a modern colt revolver then the high price will not be there.................
Early revolvers were single action- you had to cock the hammer manually, then pull the trigger. An example would be the Colt Peacemaker. A double action revolver (such as a S&W 357 magnum- Mdl 66) can be fired by pulling the trigger. Trigger pull, by itself, will cause the hammer to rise and fall. OR- the hammer may be cocked, and then the trigger pulled. A "DAO" or double action only, the hammer cannot be cocked, and the gun must be fired by pulling the trigger.

You can fire 32-20 ammo in a 32-20 revolver. That cartridge was used for both rifles and handguns. EARLY single action reolvers were meant for lower powered black powder cartridges, but later guns, such as the S&W Military & Police Revolver should fire any standard off-the-shelf 32-20.
Early 1800s you had smooth bore muskets. Not very accurate, which is why they would line up troops in mass formations and have them shoot at each other. Brown Bess for example.... They also had cannon but those also were not very accurate.Around the time of the Napoleonic wars you had the introduction of shrapnel rounds.By the middle of the 1800s they had rifles, which were quite a bit more accurate than the muskets. Sharps rifles could kill at 1000 yards. The Gatling gun was also introduced around 1860.By the end of the 1800s you had cartridge guns such as the Colt Peacemaker and Winchester rifles. Also the first machine guns.Look up black powder guns, early cartridge revolvers and rifles.
The Iver Johnson model 1900 octagon barrel blued double action revolver with the serial number 18575 was likely produced around the early 1900s, as Iver Johnson manufactured this model between 1896 and 1908. However, for a more precise year, further information about the specific features or markings on the revolver would be necessary.
Your revolver is a variant of the Colt Single Action Army. If memory serves, that would have been late in the 1800s or early in the 1900s. Your best bet will be to contact Colt, and pay them for the research and an official letter regarding manufacture date. If not a copy, these can be quite valuable.
