In a sea of mass produced watches, some companies and designers decided to continue with old traditions. They produced watches which stood out against the competition. They would make analog watches that had wristbands made of gold or other precious metals. They would hand place the inner clockworks and tune them expertly. The watch faces could be encrusted with diamonds or other gems, and the watch hands themselves carved from valuable stones. This ushered back in an era where analog watches were worn as status symbols. A woman might match her evening dress to a gold and diamond watch. A man might match his silver watch to his cufflinks or tiepin. It became fashionable to flash an expensive watch in the plain sight of others. Today there are an infinite variety of analog watches. There are even digital watches which emulate the analog look, trading LED digits for virtual clock hands. The shapes of the watch faces are endless, as are the materials that are used to create the band that holds it to the wrist. As a fashion accessory, the modern watch can shine on its own as a piece of jewelry.
