Usually some type of crushed gravel is best. You will want crushed jagged pieces of stone because they will compact better to form a seemingly solid surface. Avoid pea gravel or any ornamental rounded gravel as it will never compact, and will remain mushy allowing your cars tires to sink in. if you're going right down on soil some bigger Baseball sized rocks can go down first, then use a smaller rock (inch to half inch) at the surface. the type of rock will vary as your local supplier will predominately have what is most available in your region.

There is no easy answer to this question but the way to calculate the volume of gravel you need is to multiply the area of the driveway by the depth of the gravel your laying. You also need to make sure that your using the same units, so don't multiply inches by metres otherwise the numbers will be all wrong.

If you live in an area where crushed (sometimes called decomposed) granite is available, use that. The "fines" (finely crushed powder) will help bind the gravel together so there will be less scattering.

Level and wet the installed gravel and then compact thoroughly with heavy roller or plate compactor.

Good Luck!

What is sand and gravel our zoning allows sand and gravel Would this allow crushing of loose bedrock to become such?

You're talking about driveways, right? As in your zoning says you can have either a concrete drive, an asphalt one or a sand & gravel one? Gravel is crushed rock, and they say "sand and gravel" because gravel almost always has sand in it. Crushed loose bedrock would be fine.

What kind of rock is best for farm yard driveways?

It is going to be on the expensive side relative to gravel, sand or caliche (I'm in Texas), but crushed concrete will lock together once it is in place and driven on a few times. Absolutely won't go anywhere and will hold a "crown." It will be cheaper if the highway department has a big project going on nearby.
