The ice caps are melting so rapidly that the oceans are fast rising ... they are currently rising at 3.4mm a year, which is much faster than the average of 1.7mm per year.

New ones are formed by 'calving' of glaciers - and glaciers grow continually, in the right weather conditions.

∙ 11y agoNASA's Grace satellite show that Antarctica lost more than 100 cubic kilometers (24 cubic miles) of ice last year, and every year since 2002. Another answer: The Antarctic is not losing any ice whatsoever. The ice has shifted ever so slightly. Grace satellite data that is distributed by NASA shows that some land masses have lost a tiny fraction of their Millions of cubic miles of ice. This total is about 39 cubic miles a year. That amount if ice though is more then made up by the growth of sea ice. The average temperature on the contaminant is -7 degrees C. At no time during the year does the land reach the freezing level.

∙ 11y agoBillions of tons of ice, as the ice in an ice cap can be a mile or more in thickness. In the case of Greenland and Antarctica, the weight of the ice has pushed down the land beneath it so that some is actually below sea level.
