Humans currently release a little over 40 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year, most of which (over 30 billion tons) comes from burning fossil fuel.

This is roughly equal to the excess biomass decay of the northern hemisphere over that of the Southern Hemisphere in one seasons. The overall biomass decay remains fairly constant, and does NOT contribute excess CO2 into the atmosphere, with the exception of tropical deforestation and some wild fires.

The reason temperate deforestation does not contribute to increased CO2 emission is that much of that wood is converted into lumber, subsequently sequestered in homes, buildings, furniture. Tropical forest, in contrast, is slashed and burned.

What does a ton of carbon dioxide look like?

Carbon dioxide is colorless.

What is the value of 1 carbon credit?

It is equivalent to 1 ton of Carbon. The dollar value of the credit is supposed to be somewhere around $10/t initially but market forced will drive the value to an acceptable level.

What is the volume of carbon dioxide?

Carbon dioxide is usually measured in kilogrammes or tons. But at standard temperature and pressure, one cubic metre of carbon dioxide weighs 1.83 kilogrammes. So a ton of carbon dioxide occupies 546 cubic metres, which is a cube 27 ft by 27 ft by 27 ft.

What are carbon credits?

Carbon credits as defined by Kyoto protocol are one metric ton of carbon emitted by the burning of fossil fuels.

How many pounds of CO2 in one ton of coal?

Assuming that coal is essentially pure carbon, each 12 kg of coal will combust to form 44 kg of carbon dioxide (C+O2 -->CO2) a bit more than 3 times as much carbon dioxide as coal. A ton of carbon will burn to form about 3 tones of carbon dioxide.

How much is 1 carbon credit worth in us dollars?

It is equivalent to 1 ton of Carbon. The dollar value of the credit is supposed to be somewhere around $10/t initially but market forced will drive the value to an acceptable level.

How many pounds of carbon equals one ton?

You must determine how many grams are in a tonne. You then must then use the molecular weight of carbon to determine the moles of carbon in that many grams (i.e. (grams C)/(M.W. of C)). As there is one mole of Carbon in each mole of carbon dioxide, then multiply the resulting moles of carbon by the molecular weight of CO2 and you will have your answer.OR...One metric ton (tonne) of of carbon is equivalent to approximately 3.66 metric tons (tonnes) of carbon dioxide.

How much carbon dixiode does an airplane produce?

every 2,062 miles travelled accounts for 1 ton of Carbon Dioxide emissions per person.

Why does every ton of oil burnt equal to approximately three tons of carbon dioxide produced?

Oil is, by weight, mostly carbon (an infinite hydrocarbon chain would be a hair over 85% carbon by weight; shorter chains like those found in oil will be less than that, so let's call it 80%). Carbon dioxide is, by weight, about 27% carbon. If you divide 0.80 by 0.27, you get a number pretty close to 3, which is why burning a ton of oil will generate about 3 tons of carbon dioxide.

How much carbon dioxide is sequestered by 1 ton of bio-char per annum?

3.08 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of pure carbon biochar.

How long does it take a tree to respire 1 ton of co2?

2/3 of dry wood is carbon. The carbon came from carbon dioxide. Trees grow at different rates so you need to find out fast it grows to answer the question. Say the tree adds a ton of dry wood in 1 year (1 Ton Wood/Yr). That locks up 0.667 ton of carbon. The carbon came from CO2 which is 0.375 carbon by weight. Cross-multiply and divide...solve for X: 1 Ton CO2 / 0.375 Ton CO2 = X Ton Wood / 0.667 Ton Wood X = 1.77 Ton Wood Divide by the rate and you get the time: 1.77 Ton Wood / 1 Ton Wood/Yr = 1.77 Yr
