A boombox is so oldschool but lucky for you that makes them cheaper. They can range from 10$ to 300$ and will usually play the radio, cds and mp3s. They are battery or plug-in powered.
Phillips manufactures a boombox, the PSS110, which has the added convenience of playing MP3s.
Panasonic and Phillips have plenty of boomboxes that play mp3s. Most electronic stores, such as Best Buy or Circuit City still carry them, and still should be cheap.

A boombox is a portable stereo; so a stereo is portable and a boombox is not.
It can hold the files, but it cannot play them. It only plays mp3s.
Most MP3s are $0.99. Some MP3's, like videos, are more. But I've never seen an MP3 more than $2.00.
