It depends on where you buy it from and if you are getting a hard or soft shell. I personally got a hard shell case for $100. A soft can cost about $60 or someplace in the teens depending on where you get it.

If it is a relatively gentle trip, you should only need a gig bag. The same goes for if you just keep your guitar at home. It will protect your guitar from water or scratches. If you are playing at concerts across the country, and your guitar is in an area where there are other things on it or bumping in to it, it might be better to go with a hard shell case.

Your best bet for a case is a soft gig bag and fly an airline that allows you to carry it on. Almost all hard shell cases will allow your guitar to move around in baggage and get potentially damaged. Keep it safe and with you, unless you don't care about it.
