If you are in the unfortunate situation that you have a check but no bank account, it would seem your only option would be to go to a check cashing business where your check will be cashed at the cost of a large a percent of your whole check.
Let me suggest you cash your check at the bank the check is written on , or in your own banking account. Most check cashing fees at stores take 1- 4 % of your pay which no good. Cashing your check at your bank, or at the bank your check is written on, should cost you nothing.
Check cashing is usually free if the customer has an account at that bank. There is a nominal fee if the check is cashed at a different establishment.
If your wrote it you will have to pay for the fees and the cost of the check. If it was given to you and you deposited it the bank will charge you for a bad check in your account and take the money out. The fees are pretty steep these days.
Thrift banks are also known as Savings and Loan Associations. They focus on taking deposits and originating home mortgages. They often have access to low cost funding from Federal Home Loan Banks, which means they have greater liquidity for mortgage loans and higher savings account yields for customers. Rural banks (or rural banking) is a bank located in a rural area that offers regular banking to those in the area.
If you have an account with a bank and process your check at that bank, it will not cost anything. If you go to a bank where you do not have an account, you will pay, on average, $6.00.

You should check with a bank in South Africa. It may be that each bank will have its own policy on pricing for such a service.
A helpful website to visit is the Bank of America as it has a closing cost calculator. If one requires more assistance, check the local listings for a financial consultant.
I don't see why not. Contact your bank in which you drew the money from. It will likely cost you some money, as most every bank charges a fee to cancel a check. Best to do it immediately, before it gets cashed and you are S.O.L.! Good luck.
The cost model, if you are a company, for payroll as an example is: - cost of check stock paper - cost of employees time to process the paper - load paper, stuff checks into envelope, etc. - prorated cost of a printer and printer ink (should also include power, maintenance) - Cost of stamps....currently bulk rate is $.31 each - cost of exception handling.....lost or returned checks - have to investigate, stop payment at the bank and re-issue.....returned check with invalid address. - cost of fraud - someone stole the check out of the mailbox....again investigation, cancelling check cost (if any), re-issue check(s).
