It is impossible to directly answer this question as many charities in England are directly under the auspices ( or sponsorship) of the Royal House- for example the Royal Red Cross, which uses the motto of Faith, Hope, and Charity! The RSPCA, which antedates the American SPCA is another one. Some are Quasi-government agencies- and some are private. So it is hard to tell exactly- in the United States , we have separation of Church and State and no direct tie-ins between Uncle Sam and big charities- except occasional indirect advertising on commemorative stamps ( for example, Salvation Army), By the way they are considered to be a Religious denomination- and the Royals cannot directly belong as they are C.O.E. - Episcopal.

Billions!!! Quite apart from the pomp and ceremony attached to monarchy (even the daily Changing of the Guard) which attracts millions annually to dreary, damp London or Windsor, members of the Royal Family undertake countless foreign tours which help promote British interests abroad: diplomatic interests; trade interests; cultural interests; even a desire to come to visit Britain to study English.

Add to this exceptional years such as this one, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, which brought millions of overseas visitors to London, and the net cost to taxpayers is considerably less than that of maintaining a president as Head of State, and let's face it, neither (ex)President Sarkozy or President Obama attract tourism revenue for their countries the way the Queen does, do they? An official elected Head of State for a defined term and with inevitable party affiliations cannot rival the cachet of a Monarch who can claim to be the 22nd great-grand-daughter of William the Conqueror (who ascended to the throne in 1066), can they? That is serious historical kudos, to be able to trace direct lineage from a monarch who reigned over 1,000 years ago.
