A shilling was an old unit in the pre-decimal British currency system. It was worth 1/20 of a pound sterling, so 4 shillings would equate to 20p in modern decimal currency. At the exchange rates in effect during early 2012, 20p would be about 30 to 33 US cents.

Of course if you have four 1-shilling coins, their worth could vary tremendously based on their collector value.

Four shillings in today's money, without allowing for inflation, is twenty pence. For quite a long time after decimal currency started, one shilling pieces were retained in circulation as 5p pieces.
