ANS 2 For an average north American car it's about 5 quarts. If you're still not sure, the way to do it is buy a 1 gallon container and 2 separate quarts. Check the amount of fluid that lies in the pan by draining it into an old gallon can. Use this as a rough guide only. After refitting the filter and drain bolt, pour this same amount of new oil into the engine and check level on the dipstick 5 minutes later. If it's a bit low, you should have some left to add to it. - Always carry a quart or so in the trunk for topping up.
