An accountant is a very broad designation. Some people might actually be called an accountant even if they'd only taken high school courses. Many Accountants only have two year degrees. However if you want to be a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) you'll need a bachelor's degree with the proper credits, you have to pass a Uniform Exam and then you have to work for two years under the supervision of a CPA. In most states there's an Ethics course, a CPA is in a position where he or she could harm many many people by behaving unscrupulously. For instance a CPA could embezzle from a company and put hundreds or thousands out of work . So you can't be too careful about who you license.
