Instincts should kick in with no problem, but be SURE to supervise to prevent serious injury to your python. I doubt it should be to much of a problem, though. If you usually dangle the rat in front of the python, do this with the live one. -Side note: frozen/thawed is much safer! If your worried about nutrition you can supplement it.
It depends how big and how much your python eats. If you usually give it lots of food and he eats it right away, I suggust you give him a big mouse. (and vice versa)

A spider, even a large spider, is much, much smaller than a python, even a small python. Proportionally to their size, the spider MIGHT be stronger, but a python could easily squish a spider without any trouble.
