Newborn babies need around 15hrs of sleep in total and and around 2 or 3 naps a day. Older babies need around 14/13 hours of sleep in total and around 2 ½ naps.
THey need to eat a lot so they can grow. That's why they sleep a lot too.

As babies grow, their periods of wakefulness increase. At first, though, the need to feed will outweigh the need to sleep. Many pediatricians recommend that a parent not let a newborn sleep too long without feeding. In practical terms, that means offering a feeding to your baby every 3 to 4 hours or so, and possibly more often for smaller or premature babies. Breastfed infants may get hungry more frequently than bottle-fed babies and need to nurse every 2 hours in the first few weeks.

My doctor has told me that tweens need 9 hours of sleep a night! A Sleep Doctor should tell you to sleep 10 hours of sleep not 9 hours. Now Adult can sleep up to 6 hours, there bodys don't need that much sleep:)

Babies basic needs are to be feed, kept warm, dry and clean. They need somewhere safe to sleee. After those what do babies need the most.....love and nurturing. If you love and nurture you would meet babies basic needs and much much more.
