16 inches (41 cm) of snow fell on Halifax on Friday, December 7, 1917, the day after the Halifax Explosion. The temperature was right around the freezing point for much of the day so the snow was wet and heavy. The storm started at about daybreak and continued well into the night. High winds drove the snow into drifts, making the work of trying to reach injured and trapped people almost impossible.
