Sodium is a necessary nutrient; several cellular processes rely on it. However, as with most things, too much of it is bad for you. Probably the biggest concern is that too much sodium promotes hypertension -- high blood pressure. People who are otherwise prone to high blood pressure are often put on sodium-restricted diets.

Salt, msg, baking soda and baking powder are the major providers of the mineral, sodium in our diets. Sodium plays a role in regulating fluids in and out of the cell and in our bodies. Sodium also helps transmit electrical signals in our brain, nervous system and our muscles. Sodium is excreted in the urine. Too much sodium in some people can increase blood pressure. An extremely high amount of sodium can lead to death.
I had no idea there was such a thing as a sodium supplement, considering most people have far too much in their diets anyway (too much salt in the food). A lot of health food will advertise "Low Sodium" or "No Sodium." But to answer your question… No. That reaction you are referring to is only between metallic or elemental sodium and water, which is very exothermic. A sodium "supplement" does not contain any sodium in elemental form. It just contains a compound of sodium such as table salt (sodium chloride). If you were to be unwise enough to purchase elemental sodium (if you could find it) and ingest it, you wouldn't need to drink any water, because your saliva or stomach acid contain more than enough water to give you plenty of injury! You have nothing to worry about when it comes to having a sodium supplement bursting into flames in your stomach. -Alan My question was meant to be humorous, but thank you for the information. - Aratelad
