Sometimes people think that they want to take off a year or so - travel or work in job before they go to college. It's usually best to go while being a "student" is still a way of life. Many people plan to go later and "life" happens and so many circumstances occur that the opportunity to be able to attend college disappears.
By the same token, there are many successful older adults that have gone back and completed their degree when they were in their 40's or 50's, even 60's. The problem is, by then it's more of a goal rather then a means to be able to further your career. Not to mention the fact that it will be even more expensive.
If you can't afford a 4 year college, at least consider taking classes at a community college.
If the opportunity is presenting itself now - now is the time to go.
Personally, I strongly advise against it. Students who postpone their education put themselves at risk of either never continuing their education, or dragging it out over many years. Too many things can happen in between. If you have the opportunity to continue on, then do it. People who take time off, find jobs, either part-time of full-time, then start purchasing items on time, cars etc. This now means you have financial responsibilities where the individual must continue to work. Still, there are many other reasons for not taking that break, as good as it might look at present. Once again, if you stop you will put yourself at risk. I have over 26 years of experience within higher education, and I can tell you I have seen this many times. Always move vertical, not horizontal.
The best way is immediately after high school graduation. In other words, if you graduate this coming June, then you should be in college in September. Those who wait, put themselves at risk of either never going to college, or if they do, its years later which makes achieving their career goals and objectives much more difficult, and that for many reasons. If you have the opportunity to do it, I strongly suggest recommend you do it now.
