It depends, revolvers are much more reliable than semiautos due to their simple design, however revolvers shoot much slower and have limited capacities. Basically, revolvers will fire 99.99% of the time and are easy to maintain, however in a fire fight or other self defense scenario a semiautomatic will be able to put more shots onto a target leading to a higher chance of incapacitation of the target. My personal preference is a semiautomatic which i clean once a week to prevent jamming and misfires.

Each time the trigger is pulled, a fresh round rotates in line with the barrel so it can be fire. A (semiautomatic) pistol is fed by a magazine and has a reciprocating slide that ejects the empty casing and then loads a new cartridge into the chamber (it only has one chamber, not multiple.
