It's hard to give an exact amount because all cat foods vary in calories. Cheap brands tend to be low in nutrition, while high quality brands are more dense (and therefore, actually cheaper than they seem).

If you have an obese cat, you should get him on a diet, BUT, be careful. A cat cannot lose weight too fast as their liver cannot process fat very well. A very rapid weight loss can cause liver failure. To begin helping your cat lose weight do the following:

1. Make sure you are feeing a good quality food, and if possible, a weight control or high fibre diet.

2. Don't free feed -- in other words, the bowl should not be full 24 hours a day. If there is food in the bowl each time you go to refill it, the cat has all it can eat and needs to cut back. Start slowly reducing the amount, by maybe only 10% at first to see if he loses some weight. Make slow adjustments.

3. Encourage your cat to exercise more. Play with him and buy him some new toys.

4. if you feed only dry food, make sure to add canned food to the diet. It's much better for them and not as fattening. Some wet food should be provided daily, and you can go to an all wet diet ideally.

5. Any changes to the diet should be gradual. If you switch to a new food brand, mix it with the old food for a week or two and slowly move over to the new brand. It's much easier on the cat.

Good luck.
