All vitamins by definition are required in tiny amounts by the body. Different government databases and dietary sources recommend different daily amounts of Vitamin C, with the lowest being 40 milligrams and the highest being 90 milligrams. Vitamin C is water soluble, so if you do take "too much" of it, virtually all of the excess will leave the body through urination, but most sources agree that you should not go over 2 grams (2,000 milligrams) per day. High doses like that may lead to diarrhea, which is not very pleasant.
The FDA requirement is 60mg per day, but many doctors think that is too low. My doctor advised me to get at least 200mg per day, and if you read alternative health newsletters, many of those doctors (such as Dr David Williams) advise that you get at least 3000mg of Vitamin C per day.
The official RDA for vitamin C is about 60mg.
