On February 26, 2012, George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman, a 28 year old multi-racial Hispanic-American, was the neighborhood watch coordinator, and Martin, a 17 year old African-American, was a high school student from Miami who was staying with his father in Sanford during his two-week suspension from school. His father's fiancee lived in the gated community where Trayvon was shot. Zimmerman was in his car when he spotted Martin walking on the street. He called the Sanford Police Department to report suspicious activity. Martin was walking with his hood up, and it was raining. Zimmerman noted that he was looking at all of the houses, and he looked like he was on drugs. Zimmerman then exited his car, and the two entered into a violent fight, ending with Zimmerman shooting Martin in the chest with a gun he carried on him. Police arrived on scene 2 minutes later, and declared Martin dead within 15 minutes. Zimmerman claimed self defense, despite Martin being unarmed, but after the story gained much media attention, he was put on trial. On July 13, 2013, Zimmerman was found not guilty of murder or manslaughter.

If you are unfamiliar with what happened to Travon Martin, 17-year old Martin was walking home through a gated Florida community visiting his father's fiancee. While walking, Martin was seen and followed by a armed neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman. According to Florida law, neighborhood watchmen are not allowed to carry weapons. Zimmerman called the Sanford Police Department to report Martin's behavior as suspicious. Responders from the Sanford Police told Zimmerman to not follow Martin, but he ignored those orders. At the same time, Martin was on his cell phone talking to his girlfriend and said that he was being followed by a man that that made him fearful. Shortly afterwards, there was an altercation, which ended with Zimmerman fatally shooting Martin once in the chest at close range. Initially, local police chose not to follow up on Zimmerman and nothing was done until the case drew national attention. The case was elevated to the State level and the prosecutor found adequate evidence to charge Zimmerman of Second Degree Murder. Zimmerman was arrested and later released on bail. On June 1, 2012, Judge Lester granted a Motion to Revoke Bond due to Zimmerman and his wife had falsely claiming their accepts and failing to report more than $130,000 in their account and had been recorded using code while in jail to discuss how much money had been obtained from the website that they setup to help pay for a defense.
