The first man made flying machines of any type were manned kites(c.200~100 BC, China), hang gliders (c.200~100BC, China) and balloons (c.181 AD, China), the first fixed wing type heavier than air machine ranged in wingspan as well as weight. The first of these was noted in 500 BC China, but no description is given; most believe it was a small hang glider design. The first known and documented flying machine was made by John Stringfellow and was a 10 foot (wingspan) steam powered flying machine.
