He ripped off Rodrigo de Triana, who had spotted land first. Rodrigo lived on the Pinta ship and sighted land. "Triana! Triana!" he shouted, which translates to "Land! Land!" Columbus, knowing that the prize was 10,000 merivedes which translates to $20-30,000 here. Then, Columbus claimed to have spotted lights the night before, and stole the money from Rodrigo. Columbus scammed all that money from him! Then since Rodrigo didn't get any credit, he moved away.
