A GerbilA gerbil makes a bigger mess because hamsters just run around in their cage making no mess at all, but gerbils are wild animals so they try to borrow in their shavings and kick it around every where.....But it all depends on what type of cage you have because if you have a cage with bars then their gonna kick then out the side when trying to borrow but if you put them in an empty, never used aquarium then they don't make a mess at all.
