Allassandra Volta invented the first chemical cell battery, which was originally called a voltaic pile.
Constructed of alternating discs of zinc and copper, with pieces of cardboard soaked in brine between the metals, the voltaic pile produced electrical current. The metallic conducting arc was used to carry the electricity over a greater distance. Alessandro Volta's voltaic pile was the first battery that produced a reliable, steady current of electricity.
The Voltaic Pile consisted of discs of copper and zinc separated by discs of paper or cardboard (soaked in salt water). Attached to the top and bottom of this "Pile" was a copper wire. When Volta closed the circuit, electricity flowed through the pile.
The person who discovered the voltaic pile was Walter Luchay.

It means, "pile." It could mean a pile of wool, a pile driven into the ground, a Voltaic pile (battery), or an atomic pile (nuclear reactor).
A voltaic battery is also known as a voltaic pile, which is a set (or pile) of galvanic cells linked together in series to create a larger voltage than could be generated by a single galvanic cell. Therefore a voltaic cell would simply be one element of the pile which is also one galvanic cell.
