Towards the end of medical school, a person should look into getting into an anesthesiology residency program. Typically, a residency program will take 4 years, but a specialized anesthesiology program will often take an additional 2 or 3 years. Between medical school and the residency program, an anesthesiologist should expect to spent over ten years preparing for their career before they will qualify for certification. After successfully completing a residency program, an anesthesiologist will need to become board certified. To become board certified, a prospective anesthesiologist will need to pass both an oral and a written exam. Once board certification has been received, the anesthesiologist will be certified to work as an anesthesiologist. Since this employment is in demand, finding a rewarding position will not be too difficult. It may be best to first work for an established hospital, but after gaining experience and notoriety in the industry, it may be a good idea to work for a private practice.
