How much would it cost to have a broken odometer repaired by a mechanic or how do you repair it yourself?

It sounds like your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is faulty. The VSS controls your speedometer and odometer, and also effects your cruise control since there is no speed reading to set it by. It is supprisingly easy to fix. Typically, a 10mm wrench is all you need. The VSS is usually bolted somewhere on your transmission. But, depending on your car, VSS' can be expensive, so make sure that your fuses are all ok before investing in a new VSS. I got mine from

If it is broken they cannot be repaired. You need to replace it.

can a car be sold with a broken odometer?

The odometer located in the dash display is a sealed unit (to prevent mileage tampering) and can only be replaced - not repaired. ALSO: Are you sure it is stuck? Perhaps the cable leading to the odometer has broken or come detached from the transmission housing or from where it screws into the back of the odometer itself.

My speedometer works and the odometer does not because there is a plastic gear in the odometer that is broken.

Have your mechanic check the speedometer cable connections. They no longer use a cable. It is electronic. If the speedometer is not working but the odometer is, the problem is in the dash cluster. If both the speedometer and odometer are not working, the speed sensor in the transmission may be at fault.
