∙ 6y agoBuilt at a cost of $5 million dollars between 1890 and 1895, and another $4 million to furnish it. This includes 4 acre footprint home, landscaping, and a total 128,000 acres of land. To do this today (2009 dollars), it would cost you $230 million dollars.

∙ 14y agoThe Biltmore Estate in Ashville, North Carolina, is the largest privately owned home in America. It was built by George Vanderbilt in 1895 subsequent to his inheritance of about $12 million. Vanderbilt always refused to disclose the cost of construction. Modern estimates place the cost as high as $10 million. The estate was opened to the public by his daughter, Cornelia, in 1930. The original construction included 250 rooms, a swimming pool, a Bowling alley, multiple kitchens, an elevator, telephones and electric lighting. The property consists of 125,000 acres with landscaping designed by Frederic law Olmstead.

Cornelia's wildness was legend and she was after the men, she rebelled, changed her name at times to Mary or Nilcha, dyed her hair wild colors etc and never returned to the USA or Biltmore after she left in early 1930s. She tried to sell Biltmore House since she was the owner but her mother saved the house and Cornelias two sons inherited the estate and one still owns it today.
