Artillery was much more advanced in WW1 than in previous wars. Other things like rifles and machine guns were also much improved. - Unfortunately this wasn't the case in tactics or in senior officers who's thinking remained back in the Boer War. The most deadly thing in WW1 was the incredible stupidity and arrogance of senior staff officers on both sides.
