Elephants start breeding at age 13. They have a gestation period of 22 months, the longest of any animal. Then the elephant will have one calf at a time. Very, very, very rarely a elephant will have twins. Elephants will breed every 5 years until they're are around the age of 45.

When a female is in heat, her scent attract males (bulls) who court and mate with the female. After the mating, the males move off and the females take care of raising the youngster. Only the strong & large adult bull elephants get to mate with females.

They mate once every 3 to 4 years. She will come to heat once her current calf is old and large enough to fend for herself
