It depends on the car that you are using and how you drive it. I have heard of the Honda Insight needing a new one after 175,000 miles. With new technology, car makers are designing batteries that last longer and work better with every new car model. I would ask you dealership when they should be replaced.

Misconceptions About Hybrid Batteries?

Many people are hesitant to buy a hybrid vehicle because they have heard that the batteries need to be replaced long before the car's useful life is over. Typically, car manufacturers build hybrid cars with the belief that the batteries will last about 8 years or 200,000 miles before they might need to be serviced or replaced. Your hybrid vehicle usually will come with an 8 year warranty on the batteries and if they need to be replaced before then, the Dealer or Manufacturer will replace it either for free or for the depreciated value of the battery pack.

How much does it cost to replace Toyota Prius batteries?

According to a Toyota service rep. about $4,500. The above statement is true in a sense. None of Toyota's Hybrid Batteries have needed to be replaced from use. This is going back to 1998 in the US market. There have been a few defective batteries replaced. However the most common replacment is due to rear impact. At this point your not just replacing the batteries, you are also replacing the housing unit which together with instalation is about $5,000. The actual battery costs about $250 per unit to replace as there are 12 smaller batteries in the housing unit, not just one big one. If one should die you only need to replace that one.
