You keep administering CPR until signs of life are evident, the scene becomes unsafe, more advanced medical personnel arrive, an AED becomes available, or you become too tired to continue. You don't stop to check for signs of life since the ECC2005 guidelines were in effect.
I don't check. Maintain compressions (mostly) and artificial breathing (secondarily) until you are either too exhausted to continue or you are relieved. Obviously, there comes a time when one knows further action is futile.
For the casualty, if it is determined there is a pulse and breathing (signs of life), keep the airway open (head tilt chin lift method; unless suspected neck/back injury then use jaw thrust) and confirm signs of life every 2 minutes. If there are no signs of life at any point in time, immediately start CPR, and do not check again for signs of life. Keep performing CPR until medical personnel arrive to take over.
For an Adult, you do not stop CPR to reassess for signs of life. When an AED becomes available, and CPR is stopped to hook up the AED, then at that time you reassess. For an Infant and Child, reassess for signs of life every 2 minutes (5 cycles).
For an Adult there is no longer a pulse check. For a Child or Infant, do a pulse check every 2 minutes.
