EVERY 10-12 thousand miles. if you listen to the manual or dealer recommendationsyou will be replacing fuel pumps on a regular basis. and folks wonder why they go out.
I disagree and recommend you replace the fuel filter every 50,000 miles. Gasoline today is cleaner than it was in the past and IMHO, it is not necessary to replace the filter that often although it for sure will not hurt. Know that a partially clogged fuel filter can cause a fuel pump to wear out prematurely and they are very expensive to replace so do service the fuel filter at regular intervals if it has one you can replace.
Check the fuel filter. If your pump went bad, there's a good chance the filter is now very clogged.
