This is a difficult question to answer as it naturally depends on your family's water/toilet/shower usage. A good rule-of-thimb is every 5-7 years. However, a properly maintained system (regular addition of a beneficial bacteria tank supplement) may give you 10-12 years of service between pumpings.

Usually a septic tank should be cleaned every 1 to 3 years, but it varies, based on the size of the tank and the solids that go into it. If you're not sure, then you're better off doing it annually.

A good septic tank doesn't need pumping, but you will need to take good care of your septic tank by using products like Rid X. If your septic tank needs to be fixed it would cost thousands of dollars.

A properly-maintained septic tank should last for 20 years or more without being emptied. Avoid putting grease in the tank and you should not have to empty it.

Should you use drain cleaner if you have a septic tank?

No you shouldn't, a septic tank contains live bacteria that digest the sewage. Drain cleaners, bleach and other chemicals will kill off the bacteria. Look for products that are listed as being okay for septic tanks. For a clogged drain try a plunger or drain snake to physically remove the blockage or remove the drain and clean it by hand. Drain cleaners are rarely useful even when they can be used. Other septic care details include having it pumped out once a year and don't bother with adding any special enzymes or other products to help it digest. A septic tank works fine as designed without adding anything special to it or doing anything special other than don't poison it with chemicals and have it pumped out once a year.
