Long-haired cats are a lot more work than short-haired breeds. Maine coons require both combing and brushing three times a week and don't forget the belly and hindquarters! If you miss out on brushing for too long, or miss some areas, mats of fur will form and can pinch the skin. They may have to be cut out. Also, frequently check it's backside for clumps of fecal matter that may become entangled after use of the litter pan. If there are, immediately remove them. Wash the stained fur in warm water with mild soap. This problem can happen with any long-haired breed with long fur in the back!
