If the unit is an automatic, experts recommend about every 20,000 miles under severe use (towing etc.) and every 30,000 miles or so with regular use. Keep a close eye (and nose) on the fluid especially in the summer heat because it should ALWAYS be changed if it loses its' reddish-pink color or smells burnt like toast. It will be a brownish hue at this time and it has to be changed. Beware that some of the high mileage and semi-snythetic ATF's also have a brownish hue to them. You could probably use the same guidlines for a manual transmission as most of the Rangers manual units call for ATF also.
