As long as the laptop is working and can still run the programs you use there is no set time limit only you will know when its time to upgrade is the performance upgrade worth upgrading every year because it now take 10 minutes to boot when it use to take 8.
The average lifespan of a computer in my opinion is 4-5 years. With frequent upgrades to your motherboard such as more RAM, larger hard drives, video cards, and other devices you can probably get around 7-8 years until your processor is completely obsolete. However, a well-maintained computer might last up to fifteen years before it breaks totally, but by then you should get a new one. Gaming isn't that easy to do on a 90MHz Pentium.
i have an old emac that was one of the first to be released in June of 2002. i forget wat operating system it originally had i think it was OS X 10.2 "puma" and its still running better than most PC's. of course i have upgraded to leopard and added some ram and an external hard drive. it has been several years and its running like a beauty. if u really arent impressed i have an apple II that's still running but i never use it. its just to show off. i would say get one whenever you feel is necessary. i would say no less than 5 years.

In Windows 2000 and up, you can configure your computer to do automatic updates via the Control Panel. Windows will automatically check for critical updates and inform you of them.
If you wish to manually check for updates, it is a good idea to do it as often as possible, perhaps once or twice a week. Keeping your computer up to date helps prevent virus infections and can help keep it running smoothly.
A good PC should last you at least 4-6 years. Unless yours has broken or has become incredibly slow with age and is still processing there is no reason to replace it. It's always wise to make sure its updated to its latest system settings, etc.
