Yuki is 15, while Zero is 17 or 16, I think. The reason why Zero is one year - older than Yuki is because he stayed back a grade. Kaname is 19, since vampires age differently.

It isn't really anyone both of the characters have qualities that could make them the Vampire Knight. Between the two characters it is Zero because everything he does is straightforward and he usually (more than Kaname ) upholds the law. Kaname can't even be considered for it because of all the bad things he has done. Killing the vampire council, killing Shizuka and letting Zero take the blame, manipulating Yuki, Zero, and others and so... The only character who has done nothing bad (except cause some heartbreak) is Yuki who since she is also the main character is more than likely the Vampire Knight.
