The Home Guard was a British organisation during World War 2 comprised mostly of men who were too old or too young to serve in the regular forces. Their main purpose was to guard various installations which would then make other military personnel available for front line duties. Their other purpose was to slow down the expected invasion until regular troops could arrive to take on the defence role. In the end, the invasion didn't happen.
