A horse can become pregnant any time after its first cycle - usually around a year or two of age and can keep reproducing as long as she is sound and healthy into her twenties. Usually they are not bred until they are four years old.

A filly can conceive a foal before she is a year old. This doesn't happen frequently, but it is possible. When it does happen, the life of the foal and the dam are at considerable risk, as the filly has not yet physically or mentally matured.

Horses can start breeding at a year old, but it's best to wait until the horse is at least two years of age. You should also never breed an unproven horse as it adds to the unwanted horse problem.
