Generally you have to be 8 years old (or at least turning 8 within a couple weeks of school starting) to start 3rd grade. Most states say that a child has to be 5 by September 1st to start kindergarten, so that means to start 3rd grade, a child needs to be 8 by Sept. 1st. But some states have later cutoff dates that allow some 4 year olds to enter kindergarten, so in that case, some children may still be 7 when entering 3rd grade.
