During the Viet War, the youngest aged drafted men were about 19 yrs old. The oldest seemed to be in their late twenties, like about 26 & 27.
The US Government's statistics showing many more men enlisted (volunteered) than were conscripted is "slightly flawed" because the US Gov't data doesn't reflect that those "volunteers" (non-drafted men) were "DRAFT INDUCED" volunteers. Meaning, they "volunteered" alright, but only because they knew they were going to be drafted anyway.
By volunteering for either 2 yrs or 3 or 4 yrs, those men gambled that they might get a better job and a better duty station (like stateside or Europe, or even Korea). That was the reason for volunteering.
