Generally children are six when they enter first grade. All US states have a certain cutoff date which says what day a child must be six by to start. In most states it's September 1st. School starts at the end of August in most places, so that means the very youngest students born right at the cutoff will be just a couple weeks away from turing six. But all the other children will be six and the oldest ones born right after the cutoff will already be close to seven. And most children will have their seventh birthday sometime during their first grade year, unless their birthday isn't until the summer after school has gotten out.
Usually age 11 or 12, since most elementary schools in the US go up to either 5th or 6th grade (it's different in each school system). Sometimes they end at only age 10 because some elementary schools only go up to 4th grade.
