Tradition holds that Judaism was founded by Abraham in Israel, about 3800 years ago.

Judaism has undergone many transformations since that time. The type of Judaism practiced by religious Jews today, called "Rabbinic Judaism" has been around almost 2000 years.

  • Jewish answer:
The Torah and its commands, which are the backbone of Judaism, have never changed. The Rabbinic texts in Judaism merely set out to clarify details which the Torah did not specify; such as: the size of the Sukkah (Leviticus 23:42); what is entailed in "afflicting" oneself on Yom Kippur (Leviticus ch.16); what should be written in the scrolls "affixed to your doorposts" (Deuteronomy ch.6), and so on. In every case, the Sages based themselves on the ancient national tradition and hints in the Torah itself when stating the unspecified details.

Those things which the Rabbis did add, such as the Rabbinic decrees (Hanukkah candles, etc.), never came to replace a Torah-command or alter it.

These decrees are either added customs (such as saying the Hallel prayer); or safeguards (muktzeh, eiruvin, etc.), to preclude violating a Torah-command.
