Several of the 88 constellations officially used today were defined in 1763, by Lacaille. It seems that these are the latest ones. For more details, check the Wikipedia article on "88 modern constellations". Please note the area in the sky already existed previously; the only thing that changed was the fact that it was officially assigned to a "constellation". This should be obvious to many, but some people tend to confuse the concept of "constellation".
