If a dog is feed a natural diet, like raw meat and bones, the bones clean the teeth and act as natures tooth brush, if your feeding an artificial diet such as dry food or canned processed(horrible for your dog) food which sticks to the teeth of dogs (periodontal disease), you would have to down the road actually pull the teeth out, or have cleaned an artificial way which is expensive, and not natural!, my family has feed raw about 100 years,
