You shouldn't use a choke chain. They cause damage to a dog's neck and trachea. A leash/collar combination called a "gentle leader" is a better choice.

Should you control the frequency of your dog's sniffing of and urinating on trees and poles and pillars and posts and street signs when you're out on a walk?

The best thing to do is to take your dog and yourself to an obedience class. You can ask your Veterinarian where there is one or someone at the local Animal Shelter. The all breed dog clubs normally have them. Your dog should be under control at all times when walking your dog. He or she should be at your wide and not ahead of you nor behind you, but at your side. Be sure to use a 6 foot leash and a choke chain. Measure your dog's neck and get a choke chain 2 inches longer than the measurement around his or her neck. Keep the choke chain high up on his or her neck. Just give quick and short corrections with the choke chain if your dog lunges ahead or tries to pee during the walk. If you think he needs to urinate, then stop your dog and take him somewhere in the weeds or bushes (and not someones yard) and pat him on his side and say OK. He will soon learn that OK means it is ok to go roaming to do his or her thing on a longer lead away from your side. But normally the dog should be walking calmly at your side. By going to obedience classes you will learn how to correctly walk your dog. Walks are very important and they give your dog much needed exercise and help to bond you and your dog. It teaches the dog respect and obedience to you.

My dog is about 1 year old and she will slink into a corner and hide when she sees the harness. How can i teach her not to be scared of it anymore?

You need to socialize her. Take her everywhere you can with you. Switch from a harness, which they will just lean into and pull, to a choke chain or a soft material choke chain. Leave the choke chain on only for taking her out on walks, etc. Try enrolling her in an obedience class near you. Before putting on the choke chain, make her sit in front of you (keep your voice calm, not excited) and put the choke chain on calmly, don't let her slink away, keep her in the sit position. Take her out for a walk or something fun right afterwards, give her a small treat after you put the choke chain on. She will eventually relate the choke chain to fun things and will wiggle all over when she sees it in your hands. I think an obedience class would be good for the both of you. Ask your local Humane Society where one is or your Veterinarian.

What should you take with you on the walk with your dog?

You should have a choke chain that measures 2 inches longer than the circumference of your dog's neck and a 6 foot leash. Go to a localObedience Class whereyour dog can be taught how to be obedient in life and at the walk. It will be good and fun training for both you and your dog. You should take your dog on a briskdaily walk of at least 20-30 minutes for exercise.

How can you handle it and what do you do with it?

If you can't handle a dog all you need to go is get a choke chain!A choke chain is a lead so if your dog is pulling you all you need to do is yank it and you dog will be by your heal.If that don't work go to a dog session! What I mean by that is you sign up at dog training and they teach you how to train your dog like your dog staying at your heal or stay when you dropped something and it smashed! If you are in a hard situation go to an advice column on the Internet and you can type a question and they will give you advice on what to do!

How do you make you dog listen to you on the leash?

The best thing to do for both of you is to take your dog to an obedience class. Purchase a 6' leather lead along with a choke chain. Measure around your dog's neck and then add 2" to the length of the choke chain to get the correct measurement. Ask your Veterinarian or your local Animal Shelter where the nearest Dog Obedience class is. Check your local newspaper too for ads for obedience classes.

Why would an individual use a choke chain?

Choke chains are a collar and lead made for a dog which is designed so that if the dog drags on the lead the collar will tighten around its neck. Individuals usually wear it because they think it's a fashion statement.

Will a pronged-collar help keep your dog from sliding out of his collar when tied up?

You should not use a pronged collar, they can badly injure your dog. Pronged collars are extremely inhumane and it is illegal in some states to tie up a dog using a pronged collar or a choke chain. Don't use them on walks either because when your dog pulls metal spikes dig into your dogs neck and can hurt or choke them. If you keep your dog outdoors tied to a tree or something, realize that if your dog is in bad condition them the SPCA is qualified to take them. You should build your dog a fenced in backyard or an area. Then there is no chance of him slipping his collar.

Should you put a shock collar on a pregnant dog?

I would not recommend it. Why a shock collar? Have you tried obedience classes first. You can find local obedience classes in your area by contacting your local Animal Shelter or your Veterinarian or one of the larger Pet Stores. Take your dog on a daily walk of at least 30 minutes a day on a choke chain (measure neck and add 2" to the size of the neck to get the correct length for the choke chain) and 6 foot lead. Never take your dog for a walk off lead.

Why do dogs bark at every little thing?

If you have a dog that barks at every little thing then you have a dog that needs more exercise & a job. Try taking your dog on a walk on a leash & choke chain daily for 30 - 45 minutes. Enroll yourself & your dog in an obedience class. Walk briskly and make him or her mind on the leash. That is why the need for obedience classes. Make sure you measure your dog's neck with a tape measure & go around the neck, add 2" to that measurement for the correct size of your choke chain. Get a 6' lead. Make sure the choke chain is high up on the neck and the link is the correct position. Watch the Dog Whisperer too. Just be sure to give your dog plenty of exercise daily, be consistent. Try entering agility courses. Join an all breed dog club near you.

Do you feed a dog before it gets neutered?

no because the anistetic can make it vomit whilst it is sedated which could make it choke.

What do you do when your dog injures your other dog?

You need to keep the dogs separated until you can work this out, if ever. You may have to keep them separated for the rest of their lives. You need to do lots of obedience work with the one who did the injuring. Go to a local Obedience class near you with your dog. Take him or her on lots of walks on a 6 foot leash & choke chain. Measure around your dog's neck then add 2" for the length of choke chain needed. Only keep the choke chain on your dog when walking him or training him, then take off. Try after awhile walking the 2 dogs together, one on each side of you or have a friend walk one while you walk the other. You need to be very dominant over the one who injured the other one and let him or her know you are the leader of this pack. Make sure both are neutered or spayed.

Could you poison your neighbor's mean dog with chocolate?

That would be very cruel for you to do. Basically the dog is innocent. The owner is normally mostly responsible for the dog's actions. A healthy and well balanced dog mentally would not be mean or whatever you mean by being "Mean". Try to find some information to give your neighbor on Basic Dog Obedience from your local dog club. Contact your Veterinarian or the local Humane Society to find out where the closest Dog obedience class is. Suggest to your neighbor that he or she should be taking the dog out for daily walks also on the correct choke chain and 6 ft. lead. Measure the dog's neck and then add 2" for the correct length for the choke chain. Just try to encourage the neighbor to take his or her dog to an obedience class and I bet you notice a big change. Encourage your neighbor and you will feel good about yourself in the long run.
